What is taksim park?

Taksim Park, officially known as Taksim Gezi Parkı, is a public park located in the Taksim neighborhood of Istanbul, Turkey. It covers an area of approximately 47,000 square meters and is known for its lush greenery, tree-lined paths, and beautiful flower beds.

The park was originally built in the 1940s as a military barracks and was later transformed into a public park in the 1950s. In recent years, the park has become a symbol of resistance and political activism in Turkey, particularly in the wake of the Gezi Park protests of 2013.

The Gezi Park protests were sparked by the government's plan to demolish the park and replace it with a shopping mall. The protests quickly grew into a massive movement against the government, with thousands of people occupying the park and demanding an end to authoritarianism and police brutality.

Despite the government's attempts to suppress the protests, Taksim Park remains a site of political activism and social justice in Istanbul. It continues to be a popular gathering spot for activists, artists, and intellectuals who are fighting for democracy, human rights, and environmental sustainability in Turkey.
